Vigilantes. Are they heroes or criminals?

on this episode our Nerdtastic Duo explored some difference of opinions when it comes to DC comic heroes like Batman and The Green Arrow specifically what makes them vigilantes and not just heroes.

Even over at Marvel we have characters like Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Should they be considered heroes or criminals since they started out as vigilantes.

So, is a vigilante a hero or just a "good criminal"? And why do you think there is a difference to begin with?
